Sunderbans

The Site is Located in Puinjali village in Gosaba, South 24 Parganas. In May 2020, Cyclone Amphan wreaked havoc in this village causing large scale destruction of houses, agricultural lands and other public and private properties. During the resulting floods, water level rose to almost 2.7 meters. The built-form has a square shape which makes it resilient towards floods and cyclones. A part of the building is raised on stilts. This enables a part of the high-speed winds to blow through the empty space resulting in reduction of wind load on the building. Most of the habitable spaces plus the toilet and the granary have been placed in the upper floor. During floods even if the lower floor is inundated, the upper floor remains accessible acting as the flood shelter. The agricultural patches in the kitchen garden float up, providing food during disaster situa tions. A small rainwater storage below the roof provides fresh drinking water.
